What is Northern Wisconsin Travel Basketball? Northern Wisconsin Travel Basketball is associated with individual basketball associations and/or school teams. While the vast majority of teams are made up of associations independent of the schools, there are school teams that do participate in the travel basketball leagues and tournaments. Some tournaments are part of a league, while others are independently scheduled through a collective effort from various associations and school districts. There are a wide range of Northern Wisconsin Travel Basketball opportunities. Let's take a look at a couple of them. Great Northwest Basketball League The Great Northwest is a youth basketball league to connects various youth travel teams throughout the state of Wisconsin, specifically the Northwest region of the state of Wisconsin. The League was established for the purpose of facilitating the scheduling of games between individual basketball associations and teams. The local associations and teams maintain legal responsibility for the health and safety of all participants and spectators. The GNBL provides tournament play for grades 5, 6, 7 and 8. They provide a League Championship Tournament, an a Wisconsin State Invitational Tournament. The League Championship is usually in January, and the Wisconsin State Invitational Tournament is in March at the end of every team's travel season. Lakeland East Youth League This league provides great introductory basketball in a 5v5 setting for athletes in grades 3, 4 and 5. The tournaments are on Saturdays an rotate from school to school for participating teams. The league exposes athletes to 5-on-5 basketball with game officials, and score keeping. Every team gets a 3-game guarantee, depending on the teams that are able to participate that weekend. The teams typically include: Winter, Bruce, Flambeau, Cornell, New Auburn, Lake Holcombe, and Lac Courte Oreilles. Rising Stars Basketball Open Court Program This is a program with a tentative launch for January 2023 which includes a one-day session that includes both skill development workouts, and a 3-on-3 league. The rotating venues tentatively include: Lac Courte Oreilles, Hayward, and Winter. This is a 10-week program geared towards providing athletes in the area with an opportunity to get in additional skill work, while also adding short-sided game experience through the 3-on-3 league. Athletes will be allowed to form teams of 4 players (3 on the court with 1 substitute player), and play up to 3-games.
